Privacy policy

Desk brings your Google Classroom into one place. This page explains what Desk reads, what it stores, who can see it and what you can ask us to do with it. It is written to meet India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.

What Desk collects

Your Google profile: name, email address and profile picture, from Google sign-in.
Classroom content you already have access to: your classes, assignments, due dates, marks, posted notes, syllabus and timetable files, and submission status. Students see their own submissions; teachers see their students' submissions for the classes they teach.
Things you create in Desk: study notes you generate, doubts you ask and their answers, feedback you give, and your settings.
Your class details: the course, year, class and SID number you enter on the personalize card. Your teachers see your SID next to your name, as they would on a class list.
A sign-in token that lets Desk keep your Classroom up to date. It is encrypted before it is stored.

At sign-in Desk checks that your email belongs to the university you picked; accounts from other domains are turned away and nothing about them is stored. Desk does not collect your location, contacts, browsing history or anything outside Google Classroom and the Drive files attached to it.

How it's used

To show your assignments, notes, exams and revision plan, and to notify you about deadlines, grades, answers and exams.
To write study notes: the text of a note you choose is sent to Google's Gemini service, and scanned documents may be read with Microsoft Azure AI Document Intelligence. Those services process it under Google's and Microsoft's own terms. Only the note you choose is sent, never your name or account.
For teachers, to post assignments you create in Desk to your Classroom course and to attach the files you upload.

Desk does not sell personal data and does not show advertising.

Anonymous feedback and doubts

Feedback is stored without your name or account. Desk keeps only the week it was sent and a one-way code that allows one response per subject each week. Teachers see comments only once three students have responded, and feedback never triggers a notification, so its timing can't identify you. A doubt asked anonymously hides your name from the teacher; Desk keeps it linked to your account so you can see the answer.

Where it's stored

Data is kept in Amazon Web Services (database and file storage, encrypted at rest) and the app runs on Microsoft Azure. Secrets are held in Azure Key Vault. Files are shared only through links that expire after ten minutes.

Who can see what

You see your own data and what your teachers post.
Teachers see submissions, doubts and aggregated feedback for the classes they teach, just as in Classroom.
The Desk team can access data only to run and fix the service.

How long it's kept

Data is kept while your account is active and your university uses Desk. When you ask for deletion, or when your university stops using Desk, your data is deleted within 30 days, except where the law requires us to keep it.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your data, withdraw consent by signing out and revoking Desk's access in your Google account settings, and raise a grievance. Your choices in the browser, like theme and ticked revision sessions, stay on your device.

Cookies

Desk uses one cookie to keep you signed in and one to remember your theme. There are no tracking or advertising cookies.
